Google has been moving away from its Drive app for both PCs and Macs, and now the platform has an official end date.
Today, Google officially announced that it will be stopping support for the Google Drive app for both PCs and Macs beginning December 11, 2017. After that, the service will shut down permanently on March 12, 2018. Google notes that users who are still using the app will be notified that it is “going away” beginning in October, giving them plenty of time to use a different service instead. Google will be marketing its own alternative, “Backup and Sync,” which it launched for Mac and PCs earlier this year.
“With this launch, Google Drive for Mac/PC is officially deprecated. It will no longer be supported starting on December 11th, 2017, and it will shut down completely on March 12th, 2018. We encourage you to use Drive File Stream. As an alternative to or in addition to installing Drive File Stream, you can upgrade to the new version of Drive for Mac/PC, called Backup and Sync.”
Google Drive has been around for quite some time and has been a go-to option for backing up files and what not on computers for many users. It’s not too surprising that Google is shifting away from it, though, considering it has been pushing the Backup and Sync app for several months now. It’s good to see that Google is officially announcing the changes, and giving a final date for users to be aware of before they’ll have to switch.
Are you a fan of Google Drive in general? Have you tried out Backup and Sync yet?
Update: Google is only shutting down the Drive app for Mac and PCs and replacing it with its Backup and Sync app. The service itself is going to stay alive.
